The Spitfire Restoration Project has taken another crucial step forward, thanks to the generous support of Africa Tanks (Pty) Ltd. As we prepare to move into the next phase of restoring the South African Air Force Museum’s Supermarine Spitfire Mk IXe TE213, a key requirement is the construction of a new hangar.

This hangar will provide the necessary space to assemble specialised jigs, which are essential for aligning the aircraft’s airframe and wings. With the steel structure and roof already completed and bricks for the walls generously donated, we are set to begin construction within the next month. However, a significant challenge remained: the site has no water supply, which is critical for mixing mortar to build the hangar’s walls.

In our search for a solution, Gen John Bayne and Keith Pratt connected us with Ian Forbes from Africa Tanks (Pty) Ltd, a leading supplier of high-quality water storage solutions. Without hesitation, Ian stepped forward and offered to donate a 4,000-litre water tank to the project.

The much-needed tank was gratefully received and collected by Clive Godfrey of the Spitfire Restoration Project. In the accompanying photograph, Clive is seen accepting the generous donation from Tallie Alberts and Thabiso Masaba (known as Rusta) of Africa Tanks.

Our sincere gratitude

This donation is a vital contribution to the success of our restoration efforts, ensuring we can continue building the necessary infrastructure to bring this historic aircraft back to life.

On behalf of the entire Spitfire Restoration Project team, we extend our heartfelt thanks to Africa Tanks for their incredible support. Your generosity brings us one step closer to seeing this iconic South African Spitfire take to the skies once more.
