Artist Michael Pretorius donates aviation sketches to support Spitfire 5518 Restoration

Cobus Toerien, of the Spitfire Restoration Project, accepts a stunning pencil sketch of Cheetah Spotty—the very aircraft he flew—from artist Michael Pretorius.

The Spitfire Restoration Project is incredibly grateful to Michael Pretorius, a talented South African aviation artist, for his generous donation of original pencil sketches to help raise funds for the restoration of Spitfire 5518.

Michael has already created and donated a stunning pencil sketch featuring Spitfires, including the Grace and Roseland Spitfires (ex-SAAF TE294). His latest work showcases Spitfire 5518 as DB-H and AX-K, beautifully capturing these historic aircraft. In addition to the original artwork, Michael is donating high-resolution scans of the sketches, allowing the Project to reproduce and sell prints to support ongoing restoration efforts.

This isn’t Michael’s first act of generosity. During his visit to the Project in Centurion, he presented:

  • A sketch of Cheetah Spotty, which was presented to Cobus Toerien, who flew the aircraft.
  • A drawing of Ford Mustang DB-H, with a print destined for Colin Lazarus from Performance Centre.
  • A detailed sketch of Mustang 325 with a pilot who served in the Korean War, which was presented to Col. Tony Smit and will be gifted to the pilot’s daughter.

A huge thank you to Michael for his generosity! If you’d like to see more of his work or commission a custom aviation or automotive sketch, you can contact him at:
