Hangar progress marks a major milestone for the Spitfire Restoration Project

We are proud to share a major milestone in bringing Spitfire 5518 back to life. Construction of our dedicated restoration hangar at the AF Mobile Deployment Wing (previously known as AFB Swartkop) in Centurion is now well underway. This crucial step brings us closer to beginning the restoration work.

Once the hangar is complete, we will have a dedicated space to restore Spitfire 5518. This includes setting up the necessary jigs and workstations, allowing our team of experts and volunteers to commence the meticulous restoration process.

This progress has only been possible thanks to the generosity and support of our community, and we are deeply grateful to those who have stepped forward to help.

A heartfelt thank you to:

  • Dawid Laas, for the donation of bricks that have enabled us to start building the hangar walls. This marks a significant moment for the project.

  • Hannes Smith, for your generous contribution of 100 bags of cement. Your support has given us an invaluable boost.

  • Africa Tanks (Pty) Ltd, especially Ian Forbes and Talie Alberts, for donating a 4 000 litre water tank, which plays an essential role in the construction process.

  • Valhalla General DealersBrian and Neil Jaffe, along with Tanja van Zyl — for your supply of additional building materials. Your contribution has made a meaningful difference.

  • Hansie and Johan Nel and the team at Phambili Construction, for erecting the steel structure and roof. Your expertise has been vital in shaping the hangar.

  • Gabriel Gomes and Gomes Sand, for supplying our sand at a rock bottom price that no one could beat. We are grateful for your support and generosity.

  • Riaan Lottering and the team at Mojave Construction, for your hands on work and expertise in bringing the hangar structure to life. We are sincerely thankful for your time, effort, and dedication.

This hangar is more than just a building. It represents the future of South Africa’s last remaining airworthy Spitfire, and it will serve as the space where history is carefully preserved and restored, one part at a time.

We have included a few photos below to show the progress made so far.

Thank you to every supporter who continues to help make this dream a reality.
